Because self deprecation is funny
June 1991, Northern New Jersey – 17-year-old filly with two bottles of Aqua Net in purse and ample poofage on shoulders grooves as seen here to the Divinyls, a little More than Words, Motownphilly, and of course - the theme of the night - Kenny Rogers’ Through the Years. Can’t wait to hit diner on Route 10 in East Hanover with semi-mulleted date after prom. Although sober, will scarf down a Taylor Ham, Egg & Cheese sandwich and steak fries at 3 am. Will sleep off carb coma and hit Seaside Heights in morning, playing Roxette in ’87 Chrysler Le Baron all the way there. May indulge in two Bartles and James wine coolers and fend off I-don’t-like-you-like-that friend from A.P. English before passing out in Solarcaine haze.

Awesome.

Ah, the memories.

Sometimes I don't know what's more fun. Making the memories, or remembering them.

:)

That picture is classic!

At least you got to the prom. No one asked me. :(

That's awesome.

awesome. I personally am especially fond of the boy in the white tux in the background. yikes!

Dyarrr . . . flashing gang signs?

I hope the guy in the white suit was the date!

I have to ask..
Are you wearing Lee Press On Nails?

Blogger Unknown said...

Wow. I know everyone else seems to have said it, which must be because the most appropriate word is AWESOME. To your credit, you look pretty damn good--and the 80's are back so if you still have that dress somewhere, you should rock it on out.

TOTALLY awesome!!!!

Awesome indeed. And thanks for putting "Through the Years" in my head. That "thanks" was sarcastic.

AHHHHH almost identical to mine except mine was in Wildwood, NJ--1996. Oh the old days!!

My crush on Kelly Clarkson? Over.

sounds like high school reunion time...

i think i know that diner of which you speak...but i guess in new jersey, if you know one you know them all.

Ohmygod. That dress is AWESOME. As is the hot pink one peeking out from behind your puffed sleeve.

I always cause one of my friends to cringe when she talks about her daughter's prom and how nice the dress looked. The tormenting involves how nice it will look in a ball on the floor of some boy's car.

Of course, I would never do that here.

I'm willing to bet the song playing was something from either Flock of Seagulls or Howard Jones.

So rad man.

'Hottay' indeed.

I love the face and the very animated hand gestures. The way only a very small portion of your bangs are acutally still on your forehead—instead of plastered in a mass high above like the rest—really take me back.

Those bangs took skill and years of practice to acheive. Congrats.

Are you sure it was Northern NJ, and not "WEST-SIIIDE"?

Blogger Scarlet Hip said...

Darker hair, eight years earlier, Southern NJ, Great Adventure in the morning.

I cannot wait to re-enact this at BlogHer. I know you still have the dress, Kris.

This picture is the best thing I've seen all week. I heart you and your cat humping sensibilities.

Life doesn't get any sweeter than that. When you're 18. Twenty years go by and I've started to realize that I don't have to get drunk EVERY night. I even cut the mullet off. But man, give me some Ramones or Clash or old Van Halen and I'm right smack dab in the middle of highschool, mentally.

Blogger Keith said...

I can still hear the bangs crunching as they go higher and higher.

Anonymous Anonymous said...

That's the greatest!!

The dress? The pose? The hair? The guy in all white with black accents in the background? Classic. Just classic.

Oh, badass. You look HOT. I hope that was in the yearbook spread the next year.

I spent my prom night doing The Hustle to "I Will Survive" over and over while drinking God knows what at the older-boyfriend-of-my friend's mobile home.

Wow, that sounded even more awesome when I typed it out than it did in my head. And it's true, to boot.

Blogger southernfemme said...

i love it.
change the drink to TJ Swan apple wine and it could have been me.

cheers!

The first time I saw this picture, it didn't register in my mind that the white shit at the bottom was part of the dress.

I miss the early 90s. Those were crazy, crazy times.

One can clearly see that the music has moved you based on the orgasmic O mouth. You look fab

Hilarious--both the picture and the description.

Totally awesome!

Blogger JMai said...

Thank you for that. I'm not yet ready to face my early 90s poufage with humour. I'm still living down the big-hair/big-glasses combo. Owwch.

Happy 15 to you as well Kris! The look on your face says it all. You bring the fun as they say.

This would only be better if you said you had dyed your shoes to match...

See, now, t2ed has guessed Flock of Seagulls or Howard Jones. My thought is...too early. They were all about the 80s. Krisser is clearly mouthing "cold" as in "Ice, ice, baby. Too cold. Too cold."

Word to your mother.

Blogger Debbie Pelberg said...

OK, hilarious that I too put up a 1991 picture of myself on my blog. Yours is much more priceless. Poofy selves and all and white girl mouthing the words to what ever early 90s anthem we had at the time are just too precious. Precious.

I'm from PA, so I think we also had the same hair.
